About the Allen, TX area
Allen, TX was once home to the Caddo, Comanche and other indigenous peoples. In the 1840s, the first European and American immigrants arrived. The Houston and Central Texas Railroad established the town and named it in 1872 after Ebenezer Allen, a politician and railroad promoter. The railroad made it possible to sell crops all across the country before they went to rot, which marked a shift away from cattle-based agriculture. Sam Bass, the leader of the gang that robbed Texas’ first train in 1878, committed it in Allen.
Allen was an interurban stop on the Texas Traction Company’s line from Denison, Texas to Dallas between 1908 and 1948. When Allen was founded in 1953, it was a small community of just a few hundred people.
